4th EU-Arab Summit | Main points and statements

The 4th EU-Arab Summit, the leading initiative of economic and political dialogue between European countries and the Arab world, concluded to great success with the participation of Prime Ministers, senior government officials, academics, and executives of major European and Arab companies.

At the Opening session, Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the “historic bridge of friendship” between the two geographical parts of the Mediterranean, and pointed out the the immigrants issue as is a top challenge for both Europe and the Arab world. Heads of State and politicians Nicos Anastasiades, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Ana Brnabić, Andrej Plenković, Edi Rama, Nabil Aburdeineh, Massimo D’Alema, Francois Fillon and Tarek El-Molla, also contributed with keynote speeches on strengthening relations between countries, addressing the climate change challenges, as well as on economic opportunities and synergies within the wider region.

The two-day Summit agenda included topics such as a new European – Arab world approach, where the speakers noted the inter-connection between everything that happens in Europe and in the Arab World; Strategic economic partnerships, according which new channels of communication are being opened and significant investment opportunities are being created; Challenges of migration, about the need for a vision for the future on migration; Building Climate Coalitions, on how tackling climate change is a key objective that must be supported by both governments and citizens; and Sustainable development goals which focused on investing with a purpose.

The second day of the Summit started with a speech by former Greek PM Alexis Tsipras, followed by thematic discussions on Energy Security Prospects and Challenges; Maritime, Ports and Logistics and the new perspective in the Arab world, as shipping is entering a new era; Pathways for Shared Growth where participants presented their views aiming at the development of Greece and the Arab world; and Navigating the Technological Revolution aiming to improve countries’ competitiveness and transforming their economy. Last but not least, at the Financing and investment opportunities between the European and Arab world countries session, the speakers talked about their own experiences and successful collaboration experiment, while the Summit completed its work with a thematic debate on The development of the healthcare industry that showed that medical tourism is now one of the most important sectors that will drive the global economy in the coming years.
